Choosing engagement ring

The prospect of proposing can come with a lot of excitement and anxiety. It is a big moment in your life, and you want to get all the details right. Not to mention the engagement ring.

I often have clients who want to design their own ring, and know exactly what they are after. And yes why not be involved in designing your own ring. However when it is done in secret by your partner it can be a lot of pressure to get it right.

So, how exactly do you choose an engagement ring?

We will walk you through the process the whole way, and help you make the right decisions. But here are a few aspects to consider:

Gemstone or Diamond

Traditionally the choice would be a central diamond in an engagement ring. But engagement rings with a coloured gemstone are on the rise, and a modern alternative. Diamonds are timeless, but even if choosing the slightly more ethical Canada Mark Diamonds, they still have a large environmental impact. Lab produced diamonds would be the alternative. But why not choose a beautiful coloured gemstone ethically sourced, and due to being small small mining much less environmental impact than diamonds. There are a ray of beautiful colours to choose from, just take your pick and choose a cut and you have the beginning of your engagement ring.

Metal

The metal of the ring is an important aspect, not just for their different characteristics, but also because they vary in terms of weight, price, whether or not they tarnish, and of course, the level of care needed to maintain the band. We prefer to work with ethical metals such as Fairtrade/Fairmined gold or recycled platinum as these are ethically sourced hard metals that can hold a stone and last.

Profile

The profile of your ring refers to its shape. This is an important detail to consider because this directly affects whether or not the ring is comfortable to wear. A D-profile is one of the most popular choices for engagement rings. A flat ring is a modern choice and as the name suggests, is flat on all sides. A flat court ring combines the aesthetics of a flat ring with the comfort of a court ring.

Finish

The finish refers to the lustre and reflectiveness of the band. This is more of a matter of preference whether you want your ring to be shiny or matte. High polish finish wears down over time and becomes slightly dull over time, while a matte finish becomes slightly brighter with wear. We could also texture your ring in various ways to make it stand out from the crowd of polished rings.

Setting

The style of a central diamond/gemstone setting can affect the look of the ring. Do you prefer a claw setting, 4 prongs, or 6? Or perhaps a bezel setting, which can give the impression of a larger gemstone. Or perhaps you want the modern look of a tension setting.

Style

The style of your band is also more of an aesthetic choice than a practical one. Will it be a solitaire or do you want detailing diamonds/gemstones. Will your ring be inspired by something special to you, do you want a romantic, modern, organic or traditional style and look of your overall ring.
